Tongpan Islet is located about 6 nautical miles from Magong Island. The entire island is surrounded by well-formed basalt columns, which are considered the most developed in Penghu. It is often referred to as the "Yellowstone Park of Penghu" due to its unique geological formations. The island's basalt columns and slabbed fractures are well-developed. Originally, the columns were hexagonal or pentagonal in shape, but after intense weathering and erosion, the sharp edges of the columns have become rounded, and some basalt columns have weathered into spherical shapes. On the southwest coast of Tongpan, there is a unique geological feature formed by basaltic lava flows, creating concentric circular lava exits. The central raised rock formation resembles a lotus base, called the "Lotus Base," which appears and disappears with the ebb and flow of the tides. This is a distinctive landscape in Penghu.

The basalt columns of Tongpan Islet have been featured in many travel shows and advertisements, and the imposing basalt columns are one of the most representative and unique elements of Penghu.
