Zhongtun Windmill Power Park
Attractions
Zhongtun, formerly known as Zhongdun, is located between the main island of Penghu and Baisha Island. It was named for its resemblance to an earthen mound (土墩, pronounced "dun" in Chinese). After the restoration of Taiwan, the name was changed to Zhongtun. The area is connected to Baisha in the north and the main island of Penghu in the south by the Yong'an Bridge and Zhongzheng Bridge. The construction of the Penghu Great Bridge later connected Magong, Huxi, Baisha, and Xiyu.
The wind turbines in Zhongtun began commercial operation in October 2001, located at Zhongtun's second nursery. Since then, the wind power plant has been transformed into a windmill park and has become a popular tourist attraction and a new landmark in Baisha Township. The wind turbines in Zhongtun are the second wind power park in Taiwan and represent the third generation of wind turbines in Penghu. Phase II of the wind power plant consists of eight turbines, each capable of generating 600 kilowatts of power, with computer-controlled variable-speed functions. As wind conditions change, the blade angles adjust accordingly, allowing the turbine's rotation speed to adapt to the power generation needs, ensuring stable electricity output.
The Principle of Wind Power Generation
Wind power generation works by using wind to turn the blades of a windmill. The rotation is then accelerated by a gearbox, which drives the generator to produce electricity. The Zhongtun wind turbines begin generating power at wind speeds of around 2.5 meters per second. Wind power plants must be located in areas with long wind seasons, high average wind speeds, stable winds, and minimal obstructions, along with suitable geographical conditions, to reduce costs and maximize electricity generation.
Star-spotting Attractions
The eight massive wind turbines are the most iconic landmark in Penghu. They have appeared in music videos such as Evonne Hsu's "Give Love a Holiday," Maggie Chiang's "Why Aren't You With Me, My Love," Liu Ye's "Love Without Borders(愛無界鎖定今生)," and Chan Yawen's "Lying More(騙人彼多)."These white wind turbines are not only a popular photography spot but also one of the romantic landmarks of Penghu.
