Dongchang Camp (Xiyu West Fort) was constructed as a coastal defense structure, with work beginning on April 25, 1903 (the 36th year of the Meiji era) and completed on October 25, 1904 (37th year of the Meiji era.) The fort consists of three gun emplacements with a total of six gun positions, making it one of the island fortresses built in Penghu during the Japanese rule. Today, it is considered one of the potential tourist attractions in Xiyu Township.
Nearby historical military sites include: The Ammunition Main Depot (also known as the "Copper-Walled, Iron-Clad Ammunition Depot") with its earth-covered cool storage for gunpowder, cave-style smokeless and smoky gunpowder storage, an auxiliary gun battery of Xiyu East Fort, Dongbitou Shinyo Special Attack Unit, tunnel bunkers, Dongtai Tiger Battalion Camp (part of Xiyu East Fort), and Dongchang Camp (part of Xiyu West Fort) The fortifications, batteries and ammunition depots scattered throughout the area form a unique military landscape with historical significance.
In recent years, restoration efforts have been undertaken to preserve and enhance the artillery emplacements, underground tunnels and fortifications built during the Japanese era. The area now includes essential public facilities, such as a parking lot and restrooms. Future plans aim to integrate local military heritage and cultural history, offering insights into wartime life and reshaping the tourism image of Xiyu.
