Whale Cave

Attractions
Whale Cave is located in Xiaomen Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County. Originally a basalt headland, it was gradually eroded by the northeast monsoon and seawater over time. Eventually, marine erosion carved out a sea arch, resembling a stranded whale on the shore—hence its name. The surrounding terrain, primarily composed of basalt, creates a harsh environment where most vegetation struggles to thrive. However, cacti have adapted well to these conditions. As you walk along the slopes, you'll notice resilient cacti flourishing despite the barren land—some even bloom with striking flowers, leaving a lasting impression.
As you walk near Whale Cave, you'll spot the distinctive "honeycomb fields(蜂巢田)" in the distance. This unique landscape was created by the local Penghu community to shield plants and crops from the harsh northeast monsoon winds during winter. The fields, made from stacked coral limestone, serve as a barrier to protect the vegetation, creating a more favorable environment for plant growth. The sight is truly remarkable, showcasing the ingenuity of the island's inhabitants in adapting to the natural elements.
