Zhenhai Chen Family Mansion

Attractions
Zhenhai Chen Family Mansion was built during the Japanese occupation period. The facade is designed with arched columns in a Baroque style and the words "Li Yi Lian Chi" (禮義廉恥, meaning "Propriety, Righteousness, Integrity and Shame") are carved into the parapet, giving the building its alternate name, the "Li Yi Lian Chi Mansion." This mansion, with its Renaissance Baroque architecture, is the last remaining Western-style mansion in Penghu. It was designated as one of the ten historic landmarks in Penghu County in 2001.Built in 1926 (Japanese colonial period,) the building features a continuous row of seven arched columns on the front, resembling massive Roman columns.
Its design is inspired by the Chen family's ancestral mansion in Jinmen, known as the "Wujiaqi Mansion(五腳氣洋樓)." The mansion's distinctive features include arched corridors, flat beams, exterior columns, and a parapet wall on the second floor, adorned with decorative mountain walls or hall signs. This style blends traditional and modern Western architectural elements. Upon closer inspection, the parapet wall on the second floor displays the words "Li Yi Lian Chi," setting it apart from the typical 'Yingchuan School(穎川流派)' style seen in most Minnan architecture. Though later renovations altered some parts of the mansion, it still stands out prominently among the low, traditional courtyard houses around it.
