Wadong Chang Pai-Wan Mansion
Attractions
In the Qing Dynasty, Watong Village was originally known as "Wadong Harbor Settlement(瓦硐港社)." During the Japanese colonial period, it was referred to as "Wadong Township" and later "Xianggang." It was only after Taiwan's retrocession that it officially became Watong Village. During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the early settlers of Watong Village engaged in maritime trade with Guangdong and Fujian, operating dozens of large sailing ships. At the time, it was customary for officials and wealthy families to roof their homes with curved glazed tiles, which were known in the Southern Min dialect as "Wadong"—a name that eventually became the village's namesake. Even today, cattle, ox carts, and traditional coral stone houses remain an integral part of Watong Village's historical landscape, reflecting its rich cultural heritage. One of Watong's most legendary figures is Chang Pai-Wan, a prominent merchant from Baisha Township, Penghu, whose journey to wealth is steeped in folklore. Among his descendants, one achieved military merit and was honored by Emperor Yongzheng in the second year of his reign. This imperial decree, sealed in a golden casket, is preserved in the Chang family's ancestral home in Watong Village. It is the only known imperial plaque of its kind in Penghu's history. Furthermore, three generations of the Chang family were granted the title of "General Huaiyuan" by the Qing Emperor, and numerous valuable artifacts from this period still remain in the mansion today.
