Dongjiyu
Attractions
Dongjiyu, also known as Dongji Island, is one of the islands in the Penghu archipelago and serves as an important outpost on the Taiwan-Penghu shipping route. Administratively, it belongs to Dongji Village, Wang'an Township, Penghu County. The waters extending from the island to Tainan City are part of Taijiang National Park. As for the island itself, approximately 1.34 square kilometers of its land had been designated as part of the Nanhai Basalt Nature Reserve(南海玄武岩自然保留區) in Penghu by 2009. Historically, Dongjiyu has held significant strategic importance, serving as a major transit hub for maritime trade between Taiwan and Penghu. This strategic location contributed to its once-thriving economy. During the Japanese colonial period, in order to secure control over Taiwan and Penghu, military barracks and a lighthouse were built at the northern and southern ends of the island, with troops stationed to oversee the surrounding waters. Local residents raise sheep on the island. From the northern hills, one can enjoy a picturesque view of red-tiled traditional houses set against lush green grasslands, with black-and-white sheep grazing peacefully. Located 500 meters northwest of Dongjiyu is Chutou Islet, an uninhabited island. About 4.5 kilometers to the west lies Xijiyu, which was once inhabited and even had a primary school branch, but is now abandoned. At high tide, Dongjiyu has a land area of 1.5423 square kilometers, which expands to 1.9045 square kilometers at low tide.
