Chixi Rock Waterfall
Attractions
In the middle of the west coastline in Xiyu Township lies Chixi Columnar Basalt. Basalt columns here are especially spectacular and varied. Most of them are dark black and the color becomes closer to brown the further north you go. The basalt columns vary in shape, including vertical, curved, decumbent and inclined columns.
The Chixi Rock Waterfall originates from a fishpond located above the Chixi Columnar Basalt. After rainfall or when the fishpond drains, water flows over the rocks, creating a waterfall-like appearance, which is how it got its name. Another interpretation suggests that the curved joint structures in the rock resemble rushing water, much like a herd of horses galloping toward the sea. The "rock waterfall" exhibits a type of "curved joint" structure, offering a unique visual effect compared to the more commonly seen "columnar joint" formations. These varying-sized stone waterfalls hang from the cliff's edge, with some cascading directly down and others sloping outward, creating a majestic and distinctive sight.
The terrain of the Chixi Rock Waterfall is made up of "sea-eroded cliffs" and "sea accumulation platforms," making access to the area somewhat challenging. Visitors must follow the coastal industrial road and navigate through the accumulated basalt blocks to reach the site. The Chixi Columnar Basalt stretches from Houbizi in Chixi to Niujiaowan in Dachi. However, due to increasing weathering and collapse, visitors should be cautious of slippery rocks underfoot and falling stones above to ensure their safety.
Recommended Duration of Visit: 30 minutes
