Shanshui Beach
Attractions
Shanshui Beach is one of Penghu's must-visit beaches, stretching over 200 meters. Thanks to Penghu's rich coastal resources and minimal human pollution, the sand glows a beautiful golden hue. Lush beach morning glory plants grow along the shore, creating a vibrant contrast of deep blue waters, green vegetation and golden sand under the bright sunlight—making this beach a top destination for visitors. In ancient times, Shanshui Beach had an amusing name: "Sow Falls into Water." According to legend, a sow once wandered onto the beach and encountered a giant octopus in the sea. After a fierce struggle, the octopus dragged the sow into the water, giving rise to the name "Sow Falls into Water." During the Japanese colonial period, the name was shortened to "Sow Water" before being changed to "Shanshui" after Taiwan's retrocession. At the beach entrance, the seawall features a large 3D mural depicting the "Sow Falls into Water" legend. To make the artwork even more immersive, a real surfboard is embedded into the wall, turning the 3D painting into a 4D experience. Visitors can stand on the surfboard and take photos as if they are battling the octopus alongside the sow—a perfect photo opportunity!
