Why is it called the Erdai Art Hall?
The original owner of this building was Chao Tunghan (1918-1995). Er Dai, which means "Second Fool," was Chao's childhood nickname. Unlike other lively and playful children his age, Chao preferred sitting under the eaves, lost in daydreams, or hiding in the firewood shed, engaged in ink grinding and calligraphy. His quiet and reserved nature made people think of him as somewhat foolish and since he was the second child in his family, he was affectionately called "Er Dai."
Why was the Erdai Art Hall built in Penghu then?
After visiting Penghu, Chao grew very fond of the islands. His wish was to find a secluded small island where he could build several spacious houses and create large sculptures scattered around the island. Coincidentally, Chao Tunghan met Li Xingyang, the then Director of the Penghu County Cultural Center, who was involved in the "Rural Gallery" project initiated by the Council for Cultural Affairs. This meeting led to an invitation for Chao to settle in Penghu. Consequently, on November 25, 1987, Chao and the Penghu County Government formally signed a contract. According to the agreement, the Penghu County Government provided land in Magong City's Zhongzheng Park (now the Cultural Park) for constructing the museum, with the government as the constructor. Chao contributed ten million Taiwan dollars for the construction costs. The construction of the Erdai Art Hall began on March 25, 1988, and the museum was officially inaugurated on September 28, 1990. The Erdai Art Hall was specifically designed to exhibit the works of Chao Tunghan and is not used for any other purposes.
