Erkan Grassland

Attractions
Erkan Gangquiu Grassland, with its strong sunlight and dry climate, is not conducive to the growth of bushes. Instead, only low, wind-resistant grasses and plants thrive across the elevated plains surrounding the Erkan settlement, forming a vast, lush green landscape, commonly known as Erkan Grassland.
The grassland visually resembles a soft, green carpet. In summer, it appears glossy, vast, and pristine. In 2002, McDonald's featured Erkan Grassland in a commercial, showcasing the dramatic sight of withered grass fiercely dancing in the winter monsoon, presenting its desolate yet mesmerizing beauty to the world.
Looking out from Erkan Grassland, the view is refreshing and far-reaching.
The scenery has a distinct European feel, with agave and Indian blanket flowers adorning the landscape, pointing toward the sky. In summer, visitors occasionally fly kites on the grassland at dusk, adding to the relaxed and picturesque atmosphere.
During the Japanese colonial period, around 20 yellow cattle were raised here. However, as the population gradually moved away and farmland lay fallow, only a few old cattle—once integral to farm work—remained on the grassland, now forgotten by time.
Occasionally, villagers from nearby settlements bring cattle here and for a moment, the Erkan Grassland becomes alive with the sounds of cows. Today, sheep are also grazed here, bringing renewed vitality to the area.
The Gangquiu Grassland refers to the stretch of land from Dakeng Gouding(大坑溝頂) and Cunzaitou(唇仔頭) to Daguoye Columnar Basalt. While it was never the core of Erkan's agricultural activities, it remains an essential element in depicting the beauty of the Erkan landscape.
