Husi Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant
Attractions
The brick kiln industry in Penghu declined and brick kilns also stopped production or disappeared. In the past, there were 4 brick kiln plants in Penghu, all of which were located in Husi Township. 2 of them were in Hongluo; one was in Lintou and the other one was in Jianshan. Among them, only the Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant, located along County Highway 202, still has visible remnants. The Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant features climbing kilns (also known as ladder kilns), with the entire structure built using red bricks.Built on a sloped design, the Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant was structured to facilitate the movement of workers as they carried out their tasks. The plant features a total of three climbing kilns, with two in the south and one in the north. The southern kilns had 17 kiln chambers, while the northern kilns had 15 chambers. Each chamber measured 12 to 15 ping (approx. 40–50 square meters), with the entire structure stretching over 150 meters—making it the largest kiln complex in Taiwan at the time. At its peak, a fully loaded climbing kiln could produce 450,000 bricks per cycle. However, as Taiwan's mechanized brick production grew, Penghu's handcrafted brick kilns became obsolete, leading to the eventual closure of the Hongluo Brick Kiln Plant. Despite its abandonment, the site retains a rustic historical charm. Its arched doors and square windows add to its distinctive architectural appeal, while the towering chimney stands as a striking landmark against the skyline. The brick kiln plant is privately owned. Visitors should greet the owner courteously if encountered.
