Jishanyu

Attractions
Departing from Shagang Village or Beiliao Village in Huxi Township, visitors can reach Jishanyu, which lies about 4 kilometers northeast of Beiliao Village. This unique island consists of two flat-topped volcanic plateaus, with dramatic columnar basalt cliffs surrounding them. During low tide, the two islands connect, revealing their shared geological origin as a lava plateau formed around 12 million years ago. Over time, intense sea erosion carved them into two separate islands. Both islands contain peridotite inclusions, indicating that the lava originated from deep beneath the Earth's surface.

Sea caves and sea grooves can be found on the east, south, and west sides of the Large Jishanyu. There is a shallow beach on its southeast side. Small Jishanyu is a typical basalt column island, with jagged, uneven basalt columns of varying heights and lengths standing proudly in the sea. It resembles a massive pipe organ against the backdrop of the blue sky and ocean. The hexagonal joints, sharp edges and resonant strength make it one of the most famous spots for rock and birdwatching in Penghu.

During the summer, the number of breeding Red-necked Stints on Jishanyu ranks first in the northern seas. Every year, one to two thousand of these birds choose to rest on the island. In recent years, the Penghu County Wild Bird Association has been conducting research on the island's bird population. Through banding studies, they discovered that the Red-necked Stints on Jishanyu are from the northeast of Australia. Similarly, during the winter banding activities in Australia, they also found Red-necked Stints from Penghu. Moreover, the birds banded by the Penghu County Wild Bird Association over a decade ago have returned to breed on the island. This shows that the Red-necked Stints make the long journey between Penghu and Australia twice a year, in both spring and autumn. Protecting the island landscape is the best way to safeguard wildlife. As tourism has flourished in recent years, Jishanyu has become a new travel hub in Donghai, where the interaction between basalt columns and stints creates a harmonious natural scene.
