Xiyu East Fort

Attractions
Also known as the "East Fort Ancient Castle," Xiyu East Fort is located in Nai'an Village, Xiyu Township. It was commissioned by Liu Mingchuan in the 13th year of the Guangxu era (1887) during the Qing Dynasty. At the time, Western-style fortifications were introduced for coastal defense and military protection. Facing north with a southern orientation, this historic fortress is now a National Historic Site, holding significant historical value. Since Xiyu East Fort was designed to strengthen coastal defenses, it is strategically positioned by the sea, with a distinctive U-shaped layout facing the ocean.
Covering an area of approximately seven hectares, the fortress is surrounded on all sides by tall, solid walls. Inside, visitors can explore archways and passageways, as well as step into the command tower, where soldiers once observed enemy movements along the coastline. On the southeastern wall, a watchtower was added during the Japanese colonial period. Due to its higher elevation, it offers an excellent vantage point for viewing Penghu's main island and nearby islets.
