Suogang Fishing Harbor
Attractions
Located in Suogang Village, Magong City, Suogang Fishing Harbor is a Class II fishing port set within a naturally sheltered inner bay. As the primary fishing hub of southern Magong Island, the harbor was established in May 1953 with a 388-meter rubble-mound breakwater, a 240-meter pier, a fuel station and a 127-meter seawall. In 1977, additional funding was allocated from the central government for dredging the harbor basin and improving the pier infrastructure, enhancing its capacity to support local fishing operations. Suogang Fishing Harbor is equipped with essential facilities such as a fuel station, ice storage, fishing gear maintenance area, and an auction hall, allowing fishing vessels to resupply locally and reducing the need to travel to Magong Harbor for supplies. As a result, it serves as an auxiliary port to Magong Harbor. On land, there are additional infrastructure facilities, including a fish market, cold storage, an ice factory, a fuel station and a fishermen's activity center, all contributing to its comprehensive support for the local fishing industry. Only a portion of the catches still need to be transported to Magong Harbor for distribution.
The fish market at Suogang Fishing Harbor is a renowned seafood market in Penghu. Every morning and afternoon, fishing boats head out to set their nets and return with fresh catches to sell at the harbor. The afternoon hours, especially, draw people from all over Penghu who specifically come to Suogang to buy fish. Next to the harbor is Ziwei Temple, home to the tallest deity statue in Penghu, dedicated to the Ziwei Great Emperor. This statue, which can be clearly seen from the air, took over ten years and over NT$1 billion to complete. The seven-story temple is a must-visit site in Suogang. Nearby, you'll also find the Suogang South and North Pagodas traditional windbreak pagodas built by early settlers to ward off bad luck and control the wind.
