Penghu Great Bridge
Attractions
The Penghu Great Bridge stretches a total of 2,494 meters, connecting Baisha and Xiyu (also known as Yuwengdao) islands across the Houchmen waterway, an area notorious for its strong currents. During the winter northeast monsoon, the waters become particularly rough, making navigation difficult. To address the transportation challenges between Xiyu and Baisha, construction of the bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970. However, due to severe corrosion and the eventual collapse of the original structure, the land embankment was widened in 1984 and a new two-lane bridge was completed in 1996. The bridge now serves not only as a crucial transportation link but also as a popular tourist attraction. To this day, remnants of the old bridge remain visible in the waters north of the Xiyu end, where early concrete piers stand as silent witnesses to history. On the Xiyu side, the weathered base of a high-voltage transmission tower serves as a reminder of the era when electricity was delivered across the sea. These relics tell the story of the bridge's service and retirement—a testament to the passage of time.
