Gangzi Old Banyan Tree
Attractions
Located in Gangzi Village, Baisha Township, Penghu, the Gangzi Old Banyan Tree stands along County Highway 203, near the entrance to the Penghu Aquarium and within the temple courtyard of Baoding Temple. While the Tongliang Great Banyan is more well-known, this banyan grove along the north circuit route also holds its own fascinating history. As you turn toward the Penghu Aquarium, you'll find these magnificent trees providing welcome shade near the temple grounds. Flanking Baoding Temple on both sides, the Gangzi Old Banyan Trees stretch their branches wide, forming a vast canopy. Due to Penghu's strong northeastern monsoon winds, most trees in the region struggle to grow tall, instead expanding outward horizontally. The banyan trees' aerial roots intertwine and weave around the concrete supports, creating a dense, intricate network of greenery. Over time, these aerial roots have taken hold in the soil, growing into new supporting trunks. This natural process has shaped the trees into a living sunshade, offering a cool retreat from the heat. Beneath the trees, reclining chairs and benches provide a perfect spot to relax, chat, and take a break. Visitors passing through can pause here for a moment of rest and pay their respects at the temple.
Believed to have been planted during the Qing Dynasty, these banyan trees are now over a century old, making them the second oldest banyan trees in Penghu. Their paired presence has also earned them the nickname "Lovers' Trees." With their massive branches embracing the temple like guardians shielding it from the elements, these trees serve as an important community gathering place, where elders play chess, children play, and villagers come together to chat and unwind.
