It has been standing for over 300 years, making it the oldest banyan tree on the main island of Penghu. Despite its age, the banyan tree remains sturdy, with dense foliage and branches spreading in all directions, creating a large natural canopy for shade. It has witnessed over 300 years of history in Penghu and holds significant cultural and historical value. With its expansive canopy, this legendary banyan tree is one of Taiwan's famous "sacred trees" and has earned the local nickname "Tongliang Banyan, Chihkan Temple" in Penghu.
Entering Bao'an Temple, visitors can clearly see the natural shade formed by the banyan tree's sprawling branches. Under the protection of this ancient tree, Bao'an Temple remains vibrant with offerings from the local community. The Tongliang Great Banyan is also home to several stone tablets carved by ancient people, most of which commemorate the tree's thick foliage and longevity.
