Wang'an Huatzai (Zhongshe Historical House)

Attractions
Located in Zhongshe Village, Wang'an Township, Penghu, Wang'an Huatzai is a historical site within the Zhongshe Historical House area. The name Huatzai (literally "Flower House") originates from the unique terrain—the settlement is surrounded by hills, resembling flower petals encircling a flower's core. Early settlers built their homes near the center of this formation, specifically at Shanziweiding, which led to the name Huatzai. At its peak, over a hundred Minnan-style historical houses stood in this settlement, reflecting its former prosperity. At the heart of the village lies a small hill, which the locals call "Huaxin" (Flower Core), symbolizing the settlement's center.
As one of the best-preserved traditional villages in the Penghu region, Huatzai was later renamed Zhongshe (literally "Central Society") after Chiang Ching-kuo visited the area and noted its central position within Zhongshe Village. Zhongshe Village is entirely composed of historical houses, built in a three-section courtyard layout, known as the "Yi Ke Yin" (One Seal) architectural style. Among them, the Tseng Family House, recognizable by its red brick window featuring the Chinese character 曾 (Tseng), is one of the most well-preserved and culturally significant structures.
In 2003, with the approval of all Tseng family members, the house was renovated while maintaining its original architectural integrity. A covenant was established to ensure that all future restorations preserve its authentic appearance. The red brick window with the character 曾 (Tseng) reflects the surname of the house's original owners.
The main entrance adopts the "Daotun Yin" (Inward-Swallowed Eaves) design, with a flat brick platform on the rooftop, traditionally used for drying fish and peanuts. The main façade features elegant 5-inch-by-5-inch Japanese floral tiles, creating a refined and luxurious aesthetic. Unlike most historical houses in Penghu, which are built from coral stone, the Tseng Family House is constructed using basalt, making it particularly distinctive. The window designs resemble scrolls, adding a scholarly charm to the house.
Recognized as one of the world's 100 most endangered heritage sites, Huatzai has been officially designated as a "Historical House Preservation Area" under Taiwan's Council for Cultural Affairs.
