Qimeiyu (Qimei Island)
Attractions
Located at the southernmost end of the Penghu archipelago, Qimei Township was historically known as "Nanyu" (Southern Islet) or "Dayu" (Great Islet) during the early Qing Dynasty. Due to its relatively large size among the southern outlying islands, it was again renamed "Dayu" during the late Qing and early Republic era. During Japanese rule, Dayu was administratively under Wang'an Township. In August 1944, it was separated from Wang'an and designated as Dayu Township. On December 11, 1945, it was renamed Dayu Township and by 1949, the fourth Penghu County Magistrate, Liu Yenfu, proposed renaming it "Qimei Township" to honor the Seven Beauties (Seven Martyrs) for their chastity and unwavering virtue. This name has since been permanently retained. Today, Qimei Township consists of six villages: Donghu, Xihu, Zhonghe, Pinghe, Haifeng and Nangang. The island is located at 119°40′E longitude and 23°16′N latitude, approximately 29 nautical miles (36 km) from Magong, 48 nautical miles from Tainan, and 58 nautical miles from Kaohsiung. The island covers an area of approximately 6.99 square kilometers, with a perimeter of 14.40 kilometers. It is a dissected table island and the fifth-largest island in the Penghu archipelago.
