Daguoye Columnar Basalt

Attractions
The majestic basalt rock wall of Daguoye Columnar Basalt was formed when magma, rising from beneath the sea due to changes in the terrain, cooled and contracted, causing the rock mass to generate polygonal columns, typically with five or six sides, which then fractured. This fracture pattern is known as columnar jointing.
What makes the Daguoye basalt unique is that the entire cliff is made up of these columnar joints. Its impressive height adds to the dramatic beauty of the landscape. After heavy rainfall, the basin at the foot of the basalt absorbs the rainwater, creating a mirror-like reflection of the towering rock wall on the water's surface, producing a breathtaking and one-of-a-kind view. This often draws visitors to capture the scene, making it one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Xiyu Township.
The discovery of the Daguoye Columnar Basalt dates back to the Japanese colonial period. At that time, the government planned to build a dock at Daguoye to facilitate maritime transport between Xiyu and Magong. During the construction, workers unknowingly unearthed this ancient basalt formation as they excavated stones and soil for land reclamation to build the port.
