Guoye Lime Kiln
Attractions
Guoye Lime Kiln is located on a small hill by the seawall in Guoye Village, Huxi Township. It was constructed in the 1960s by Mr. Chen Fuyin, a local resident of Guoye Village, as a lime kiln for producing lime.
In the early years, the lime industry in Penghu thrived, with "sand" (also known as "lianzi," a mixture of coral reef fragments and shellfish remains) commonly found along the coastline being the primary raw material for lime production. The white, high-quality lime was a key adhesive used for building walls before cement became widely available. From 1948 to 1965, the export of Penghu lime reached its peak, coinciding with the mass construction of row houses. However, the industry began to decline after 1973 due to the competition from modern cement materials. Guoye Lime Kiln played a significant role during this prosperous period.
The Guoye Lime Kiln is relatively well-preserved and stands as a testament to the production process and history of oyster shell lime and clamshell lime in Penghu, holding significant historical value. The structure is primarily made of basalt and was registered as a historical building in 2007. In 2015, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the county government undertook restoration work. However, it remains closed to the public, allowing visitors only to admire its beautiful exterior. Recently, the Penghu County Government Tourism Department has partnered with the community to open Guoye Lime Kiln as a tourist information center, offering services and guided tours. It is located near Guoye Observation Tower and Longmen, with views of stone weirs along the coast, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn more about this historically rich site and the Guoye community.
