Suogang South and North Pagodas

Attractions
The Penghu archipelago experiences strong winter monsoons. The ancestors of Suogang built pagodas to ward off the winds and calm the spirits. Due to the lack of a high mountain barrier around Suogang, the dual pagodas were built at the exit of the harbor to serve as navigational markers for fishermen. Suogang Village, a fishing port in Magong City, is known for its abundant squid harvest, making its fishing industry quite prosperous. The village is also known as "Suoguan Harbor" due to the Min Nan pronunciation of "squid."
The Suogang pagodas consist of the South Pagoda (Wu Pagoda) and North Pagoda (Zi Pagoda), located in the northern part of the old settlement. The original location had a small hill on the north side, which served as a support for the village. However, due to the strong northeast monsoons, the hill gradually eroded, leading to the local saying: "Suoguan Harbor had a mountain, but Sow Water got a bay," referring to how the sand dunes were blown into the Sow Water (Shanshui) bay. To compensate for the loss of this natural barrier, two large stone towers were built on the original site to restore the feng shui. The Suogang Towers are cone-shaped structures made of nine layers of stacked black stones. They are among the most ancient stone towers in Penghu. Originally built with black stones, they were rebuilt in 1963 using black basalt cement materials (made of basalt and cement). The first layer has an area of approximately 66 square meters. The pagodas were originally seven-tiered stone structures. After the rebuild in 1963, an additional stone tablet was added, bringing the total to nine layers, making it the tallest pagodas in Penghu. The North Pagoda stands at a height of 10.96 meters and the South Pagoda stands at 10.94 meters, making them the tallest stone pagodas in all of Penghu.
