Houliao Paradise Road

Paradise Road is a popular tourist destination in Penghu, formerly known as Dongping Mazi. According to the research of Hsu Yaopin, over a century ago, Dongping Mazi (東坪碼仔) was built for two main purposes: to dock fishing boats and to ward off bad luck. The northern winds and energy flow from islands like Gupoyu (姑婆嶼) and other outer islands would flow southward toward Houliao (後寮), creating an unfavorable influence. To counter this, the ancestors, following the guidance of Baosheng Emperor (保生大帝), constructed Dongping Mazi. The nearby cliffs of Yandun Mountain (煙墩山崖), shaped like a bow, and the arrow-like design of Dongping Mazi were intended to work together to break the bad luck. Houliao Village is also home to the west pier and sampan pier. The west pier referred to by locals is now the Houliao Fish Harbor dock. Later, to accommodate more boats, the Dongping Mazi was added based on the seabed's topography, which is now the location of Paradise Road. Additionally, after the construction of an L-shaped sampan pier between the two piers (east and west piers), Dongping Mazi was then referred to as the "old dock. "Today, the sampan pier still features a memorial stone that reads "Protect My Fishing Boats, "though its exact construction date is unclear, likely around 1961.
