The Dongwei Tunnel
The Dongwei Tunnel is approximately 120 meters long and features a semi-underground, arched structure. Originally constructed during the late Japanese colonial period as an air-raid shelter, it was used to store military supplies and provide refuge from U.S. air raids. In 1961, the tunnel was further reinforced by the military. The southeast side once served as barracks for the Air Force’s 208th Anti-Aircraft Battalion (1st Company), while the northwest section housed the “Fenghua No. 2” communications room of the Army’s Caiyuan Division headquarters. Adjacent to this was a wartime command post. Unlike typical military tunnels, Dongwei Tunnel did not have an official military designation number. After military units withdrew in the 1990s, the site lacked management and maintenance, resulting in cluttered interiors and minor wall cracks.
To revitalize the site and create a new tourism highlight, the Penghu County Government proposed the “Dongwei Tunnel Military Experience Project” and secured funding from the Tourism Administration, MOTC, under the 2022 Experiential Tourism Development Program. The project was completed in August 2023, transforming the tunnel into a historically rich attraction integrated with the surrounding community. In 2024, further enhancements incorporated curated art exhibitions, creating a new cultural tourism destination. Combined with nearby attractions such as Dongwei Reservoir, Stone Carving Park, Dongwei Tianhou Temple, and Zheng Ganquan Wandai Well, the area has been developed into a new travel route.
To further activate military heritage and enhance local tourism, the “Dongwei Tunnel Art Gallery” officially opened on June 5, 2024. In addition to static exhibits featuring works by local artists, the gallery showcases award-winning photography from past Penghu Fireworks Festivals. It also offers interactive AR experiences, including dynamic marine-themed visuals with dolphins, sea turtles, and schools of fish. The unique tunnel environment is combined with immersive displays, including a fireworks-themed photography zone and drone simulation experiences, allowing visitors to capture personalized short videos.
