Dongjiyu Lighthouse
Attractions
Perched atop a rocky reef on the northern edge of Dongjiyu at an elevation of 47 meters—the island's highest point—Dongjiyu Lighthouse serves as a crucial navigational beacon for vessels traversing the treacherous waters of the Penghu Channel.
During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, there was frequent maritime trade between Taiwan and Fujian. Based on the navigational experience of earlier seafarers, ships departing from the mainland and heading east would rely on visual landmarks, sequentially aligning with Xiyu and Huayu before safely reaching Dongjiyu.
Historically, shipwrecks in the Wang'an waters frequently occurred around Dongjiyu, making it one of the most feared maritime hazards, instilling terror among many sailors and fishermen.
In response to these dangers, the Japanese government constructed the Dongji Lighthouse in 1911 (the 44th year of the Meiji era) to improve navigational safety. The original lighthouse was a cylindrical iron tower,
but despite its operation, accidents in the Penghu Channel continued. Over the years, multiple upgrades were made to enhance its effectiveness, resulting in the structure seen today—continuing to illuminate the sea and guide passing vessels.
