Tomb of the Seven Beauties
Attractions
Located in Nangang Village of Qimei Township in Penghu, the Seven Beauties Tomb can be seen when walking towards Nanhu Harbor in the southeast direction. There are two stone steles at the site, which are the only two remaining today. They are positioned in front of and behind a fragrant flower tree. Due to the passage of time, the inscriptions on these steles have become blurred and are no longer legible. A tragic legend surrounds the Seven Beauties Tomb. Pirates once raided Qimei Island, killing and looting the village. Seven women in the village, unwilling to be dishonored by the pirates, chose to end their lives by jumping into a well. The villagers later filled the well with earth, and shortly after, a fragrant flower tree grew beside it, emitting a pleasant scent. In honor of their sacrifice, a memorial was erected. The fragrant flower tree continues to bloom every year and the local residents still hold annual ceremonies to honor the seven women. The island of Qimei was originally called Dayu, but it was renamed Qimei in 1949 to commemorate this story. In Penghu, there is a belief in "flower daughters(花娘)"—unmarried women are referred to as flower daughters. It is said that the seven women in the Seven Beauties Tomb were all flower daughters and men who behave disrespectfully at the site will be punished by their spirits.
