Zhongyang Old Street

Attractions
In 1984, Zhongyang Old Street was officially designated as a Cultural Heritage Preservation Area. By 1994, local residents formed the "Penghu First Street Revitalization Association." With government funding, the street was renovated and restored to its current Fujian-style architectural appearance, coinciding with the tourism boom in Penghu, bringing back its former glory. The street is also home to several exotic buildings, including a Baroque-style traditional Chinese medicine shop and an old Japanese inn, both once famous establishments. As visitors stroll through Zhongyang Old Street, they will pass by "Mo Ru Alley" (literally "Breast-touching Alley"), a narrow passage connecting Zhongyang Street. Due to the limited space between old houses in Penghu, people used to have to walk sideways when encountering others in the alley. Women would walk through this passage with their hands over their chests, which led to the alley's name. Today, after reconstruction, the alley has been widened significantly.

The most famous landmark of Zhongyang Old Street is the Four-Eyed Well, Penghu's oldest well, dating back over 400 years. Originally a large communal well, it was later covered with granite slabs, dividing it into four smaller openings to prevent accidents while drawing water. This unique design earned it the name Four-Eyed Well.
