Hung Ken-Shen Art Museum
Attractions
Hung Kenshen (1946–) is a renowned contemporary ink artist from Dingwan Village, Huxi Township, Penghu County. After graduating from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, the artist returned to his hometown to teach at Magong Junior High School for a year before relocating to Kaohsiung. There, he taught at Daren Junior High School, Kaohsiung High School, and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Renowned for his modern ink painting creations, he became a significant representative artist. He was also deeply involved in the modern art movement in southern Taiwan, making a profound impact in the field.
To honor his outstanding artistic achievements and contributions, the county has dedicated a historic building to establish the Hung Ken-Shen Art Museum. Curated by teacher Xiao Qiongrui, the museum's inaugural exhibition focuses on three aspects: "Hung Ken-Shen as an Artist," "Hung Ken-Shen as an Art Movement Advocate," and "Hung Ken-Shen as an Art Educator." The museum aims to become a significant ink painting hub in the country, continuing to foster the development of contemporary ink art.
The site was originally the Qing Dynasty Penghu Naval Garrison Headquarters (also known as the Deputy Admiral's Office), later repurposed as the Penghu Magistrate's Office. During the Japanese occupation, the "Military Police Corps of Penghu County" was stationed here, and the building was remodeled. Today, it houses a cultural center, fencing room, stables and a traditional Japanese-style room, which are remnants of the original structure. The waterproof design of the Japanese-style rain cover at the building's base gives the appearance of a flowing skirt, a feature commonly seen in Taiwanese buildings from the same period but rare in Japan.
After World War II, the site was used by the Penghu Defense Command's Transportation Department. In 1958, it was reorganized as the Magong Harbor Command Post under the Penghu Defense Command.
In 1995, two Japanese-style dormitories were demolished and replaced with a two-story reinforced concrete building, which is now the "Dormitory Building(寢室大樓)" at the rear of the museum.
In 2002, the Penghu County Government declared the building a historic site and following research, multiple restoration phases have gradually brought the site back to its current state.
Closed Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, and National Holidays. *Lunch break from 12:00–14:00. No entry 30 minutes before closing.
