Magong Jinguitou Fortress Culture Park
Attractions
The Jinguitou Fortress was built by General Wu Hunglo and is one of the most powerful fortifications in the Penghu archipelago, along with Xiyu West Fort, Xiyu East Fort and Gongbei Fort. After World War II, the site was taken over by the Republic of China military. The original cannons became obsolete and were decommissioned in the 1950s. The fortress was later repurposed by the Penghu Defense Command as the Tiannan Barracks(天南營區). A new underground passage was added to the southern side of the fort, connecting to the coastline. Eventually, the military transferred the site to the Penghu County Government, and it was designated a national historic site on November 21, 2001. It is now open for public visits.
The Jinguitou Fortress is equipped with Armstrong breech-loading guns of 7-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch calibers. The fortress structure is similar to that of Xiyu West Fort, Xiyu East Fort, and Dachengbei Fort, featuring brick and stone construction with a three-coat soil vault. The surrounding earth walls, gun emplacements, shelter, and entrance gate are well-preserved. At the entrance, visitors can see a plaque inscribed with "Tiannan Lock(天南鎖鑰)," written by General Wu Hunglo, marking the fortress's strategic importance. The complex includes gun positions, outer walls, passageways, officer quarters and soldier barracks, forming a castle-like architecture that integrates operations, training, and living areas. The soldier barracks have been transformed into exhibition spaces. Thanks to the presence of military communication units, the heritage site's degree of wear has been minimized, preserving its historical appearance.
The site also features military figures and shell models, along with exhibits depicting the historical battles in the underground tunnels of the fortress. These efforts breathe new life into the site, which has become a new cultural and tourist attraction in Penghu. Visitors can enjoy the historical atmosphere and plan a cultural tour of Magong, combining visits to nearby Guanyinting and Duxing 10th Village.
