Four-Eyed Well
Attractions
Located at the northern end of Zhongyang Street, the first street in Penghu (also known as "Top Street(頂街)",) the Four-Eyed Well has an extremely long history, dating back to the mid-Ming Dynasty, making it several centuries old. Originally, it was a large communal well that provided water to residents of Zhongyang Street and its surrounding areas. This well has never run dry, even during severe droughts, always offering fresh, cool and sweet-tasting water to the people of Penghu. The street in front of the well was even named Dajing Street (大井街, or "Great Well Street") in its honor.
Also referred to as the Four-Hole Well or Four-Opening Well, it has a depth of 5.6 meters and a width of 1.8 meters. To prevent children and adults from accidentally falling into the well, the well's opening was raised, and to ensure orderly water collection, it was divided into four sections, each covered with a 36 cm-wide opening facing one of the four cardinal directions. This design allowed households to line up and collect water efficiently.
In the past, this well was a vital source of domestic and drinking water for the residents living around Zhongyang Street. It has now been transformed into a tourist attraction, adding to the historical charm of the area.
