  • Penghu Reclamation Hall

Penghu Reclamation Hall is a living piece of history, witnessing the political trajectory and cultural integration of Penghu. Originally the "Penghu County Magistrate's Mansion," the building served as the residence for the governors during the Japanese colonial era and the county magistrates after World War II. Constructed in 1933, it was first occupied by the 23rd governor of Penghu, Ooiwa Seizou. The architectural charm of the Penghu Reclamation Hall lies in its blend of Japanese and Western styles with local Penghu building materials. For instance, the entrance hall, vestibule, reception room (Western-style living room), and tea room (dining area) feature early Showa-era Western-style reinforced concrete construction. On the other hand, the roof, zashiki (Japanese-style living room), secondary rooms (living spaces), bedrooms, and corridors are designed and built with Japanese-style elements. The front courtyard of the main entrance is distinctively Penghu, with low walls made of local basalt (known as "Maogong stone"), demarcating the interior from the exterior.
